Prepare blood
Do I need to fast?
Some blood samples should be taken fasting, if your order requires fasting, this will be stated on the product page under the information before sampling and when you activate the referral.
Being fasted normally means that you should not eat or drink anything other than water, coffee or tea without sweeteners, cream or milk for at least 10 hours before the test.
Example: If you are going to give a sample at 8am, start fasting by 10pm the night before.
You may drink water during fasting; it may also facilitate the actual sampling to be normally hydrated.
When should I give the sample?
Some blood counts vary naturally throughout the day, so a sample may need to be taken in the morning or before a certain time in order for the result to be properly assessed.
If your sample is to be taken before e.g. 10.00 this is stated in the instructions for the product and when the referral is activated.
If you have ordered several samples at the same time, follow the instructions that set the highest requirements. If one of the samples is to be taken fasting and before 10.00 am, the entire sampling should be carried out fasting before 10.00 am.
Rest before sampling
Please sit down and rest for about 15 minutes before taking your blood test. Stress, fast walking, cycling and other physical exertion just before the test can temporarily affect some blood counts.
Exercise before blood tests
Avoid physical exercise the day before and the morning of the test, especially if your order contains markers that may be affected by muscle work.
Alcohol and nicotine
Avoid alcohol the day before the test, as alcohol may affect some blood counts.
If you are going to give a fasting sample, do not smoke, use snus, use other nicotine products or chew gum during fasting.
Medicinal products and food supplements
Certain medicines, vitamins and food supplements may affect the results of blood tests. Therefore, for some analyses, there may be specific instructions on when a medicine or food supplement should be taken in relation to the sampling.
Always follow the instructions for the product you have ordered. Unless specific instructions are given, you should continue to take your prescribed medicines as prescribed by your doctor and not change the treatment on your own.
If you are using high dose biotin (vitamin B7) supplements or are unsure whether a medicine or food supplement may affect the sampling, we recommend that you contact us before your visit.
Always include the relevant medicines and food supplements in your health declaration when asked to do so.
If you are ill
Fever, infection, inflammation or other active illness can affect several blood counts, so in some cases it may be better to wait until you recover.

Menstrual cycle and hormone samples
Some hormone levels vary during the menstrual cycle, so a sample may need to be taken during a certain part of the cycle or assessed taking into account the current cycle day.

At the sampling office
When you arrive at the clinic, you must show a valid ID.The referral is electronic and is available at the clinic you chose when it was activated.
The blood sample is taken from a blood vessel in the arm. The actual sampling usually takes only a few minutes, but there may be a waiting time. At some clinics you need to make an appointment while others have a drop-in.
Tell your staff if you tend to feel dizzy or faint during blood tests, and you may have to leave the sample lying down.
After the blood test
After the test, you can eat, drink and take your medicines as usual, unless you have been instructed otherwise.
Different analyses take different times. Your results will be published in the test results service once they have been received. If multiple analyses are included, the results may be available at different times.

If you have claustrophobia
The MRI scanner is designed as a tunnel and the space can be perceived as crowded. If you have claustrophobia or have serious concerns about the examination, please inform us and the clinic well in advance.
