How long does an MRI take?

The length of time an MRI scan takes depends on the area of the body being examined and how many series of images need to be taken. In most cases, an MRI scan takes between 15 and 45 minutes, but more extensive examinations can take up to an hour.

For some examinations, such as MRI of the brain, lower back or knee, the examination time is usually between 20–30 minutes. If several areas are examined at the same time – for example, both the cervical spine and thoracic spine or the whole body, the time can be extended. The time can also be affected by whether contrast medium is needed, which may be added if the doctor needs clearer images of vessels or specific tissues.

It is important to lie completely still during the entire examination so that the images are sharp. You will often be given hearing protection or headphones because the MRI scanner makes loud noises. The imaging itself takes place at intervals, and you will receive information throughout the examination from the staff.
