How loud is an MRI scan?

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is relatively loud compared to many other examinations. This is because the powerful magnetic coils in the machine rapidly change magnetic fields during imaging, which creates loud knocking, thumping or pulsating sounds.

The sound level can vary between 80–110 decibels, which can be compared to the sound of a hair dryer, a motorcycle or even a concert. The sounds are completely harmless but can be experienced as unpleasant if you are not prepared.

To reduce the noise level, you will always be given ear protection or headphones during the examination. In many cases, you can also listen to music or communicate with the staff via a microphone. The examination is done in short sequences, which makes the sounds more manageable.
