How Often Should You Get a Health Check? How to Find the Right Interval for You

Regular health screenings can help identify early warning signs, but how often should you get tested? In this article, physician Erik Lind shares his advice on how to think about health check-ups based on age and other risk factors.

Quick version

Why Are Regular Health Check-Ups Important?

Many common diseases develop slowly without any early symptoms. Changes in blood pressure, blood sugar, or blood lipids can occur gradually over several years before you notice anything. A health check-up can help you detect early warning signs, reduce the risk of complications, and provide better conditions for long-term health.

How Often Should You Get a Health Check-Up?

There is no official national standard for how often healthy adults in Sweden should undergo a health check-up. Instead, recommendations are based on combined clinical experience and are adapted according to age, lifestyle, and individual risk factors.

Ages 25–40

For younger, otherwise healthy adults without known risk factors, there is rarely a need for frequent check-ups. For this group, it may be sufficient to have a health check-up every two to three years. However, if risk factors such as family history, overweight, or smoking are present, it may be wise to monitor your health more often, sometimes annually.

Ages 40–50

In your 40s and 50s, the risk of several common diseases begins to increase, even among people who feel healthy. At this stage, we often recommend check-ups every one to two years, depending on lifestyle, previous test results, and family history.

Ages 50+

After the age of 50, annual health check-ups are often justified, especially if there are chronic conditions or signs of increased risk for cardiovascular disease or diabetes. For individuals in clear risk groups, follow-up may need to take place even more frequently and should always be tailored individually.

Individual Factors That Affect How Often You Should Be Checked

The need for regular health check-ups is strongly influenced by personal circumstances:

  • Chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Family history of cardiovascular disease or other serious illness
  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking, overweight, high stress, or low physical activity
  • New or vague symptoms, such as persistent fatigue, dizziness, or unintentional weight changes

Track Your Health Over Time

What often provides the greatest medical value is not a single measurement, but the ability to monitor how health markers change over time. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood lipids may fall within the reference range at one point, yet still show a slow unfavorable trend that might otherwise go unnoticed.

In our test results service Zample, your lab results are collected so you can clearly track your health data over time. This makes it easier to detect deviations and trends at an early stage and provides better conditions for preventive action.
